Sažetak
Croatian coastal zone belongs to a small part of yet nondevastated European Mediterranean coast and because of that a lot of effort on local and national scale should be put in its active and permanent protection. The proper planning of protected areas along with its organized and professional management have many advantages in ecological, economical and social senses. We suggest that a great number of permanently protected small areas of different natural habitats would ensure a significant renewal of marine bioresources and preservation of existing biodiversity. In that way marine parks would provide a safe oases for spawning and growth of many economically important marine species. For effective protection of such areas teams of professionals in cooperation with the scientific institutions should be employed to ensure permanent monitoring. A wise planning of sustainable touristic and industrial development along the Croatian coast is also very important, especially now in postwar revival of national economy. All that could also have a positive influence on demographic status of Croatian islands which were economically and politically neglected for decades. Due to the importance of the issue a multidisciplinary approach is necessary: first of all in making appropriate legislation which will take all that in account. In that way it is possible to ensure the proper management of the coastal zone.
