Sažetak
Dalmatian type of coast is worldwide known among geomorphologists and geologists. It is distincted by a few rows of islands (up to 4) parallel to the coast. A formation of Dalmatian coast is a result of its karstic relief and the Holocene sea-level rise. An oligotrophic character of Adriatic sea as well as the fact that it is a shallow and enclosed sea, together with its geological origin resulted in a large number of particulary interesting natural habitats. They are still preserved but not yet adequatelly scientifically surveyed. Some of examples are: marine lakes, submerged caves and pits, submarine freshwater springs, highly stratified salt-wedge karstic estuaries, etc. Such restricted systems are very sensitive to the human influence. The living organisms in each of them have certain peculiarities as a result of different ecological properties of the habitat. Due to that such small ecosystems can be considered as a prominent source of biodiversity. Now, after the war in Croatia, a fast revival of industry and tourism along the coast is expected which can further endanger those small and fragile coastal ecosystems. Therefore it is important to carefully plan a sustainable development of our coastal zone. A proposed proper and professional management, taking in account results of multidisciplinary scientific research, is aimed towards protection of natural resources and biodiversity as well as development of human activities in the area.
