Sažetak
This article explores patterns of digital political engagement of European online audiences and the way they differ across different media systems, in a multilevel, cross-national comparative research design. We investigate the influence of institutional structures of empirical media systems/ digital mediascapes (Peruško, Vozab & Čuvalo, 2015) on two dimensions of political engagement - political information & political participation, operationalized through audiences communication practices on the Internet. The media system, as structural institutional framework, is operationalized with the theoretical model of digital mediascapes that applied to 22 European Union countries produce three clusters/ media systems (Peruško, Vozab & Čuvalo 2015). The audience sample was gathered in representative on-line audience surveys in 8 east and west European countries, members of the European Union (N= 9532). Factor and cluster analyses were performed showing types and patterns of audience practices in the digital public sphere. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis and ANOVA were performed to relate the individual level variables to the macro-level clusters of digital media systems. The article shows that varied structural preconditions in three European digital mediascapes affect varied patterns of mediatized on-line political engagement of citizens/audiences.
