Sažetak
As you know, Varroa mite is a major international problem of beekeeping at this time. Since the 1980s, varroa rapidly spread around the globe and now infests more than 90% of hives. Estimated number of hives in the world today is around 80 million. Most chemical products for fighting against varroa are at the same time toxic to mites and to bees, and can also leave residues in the honey and in other bee products. The mites can also become resistant to the chemicals so more toxic chemicals may be applied from year to year. Some of the chemicals are even on the banned list in some of the countries. Chemical treatments are expensive and labor consuming. The most alarming fact is that every year beekeepers are still losing 20 – 40 % of their colonies due to varroa infestations. Different methods for destroying varroa which are patented and available at the market either have a non-uniform temperature distribution, a high power consumption or are just too complex and expensive to build.
