Sažetak
Teaching music in all general secondary schools is aimed at enabling students to, by acquiring music competence, comprehend music, to understand it and to evaluate music. At the same time they are developing their musical taste. In order to achieve the set goal and in accordance with the changes in the Croatian educational system, the National Curriculum Framework in particular, teaching music has to meet educational requirements which are based on open curriculum principles. In that way the teaching model, applied since the establishment of grammar schools, should be made more contemporary. The present, traditional attitude towards education based on programmes and teachers focus on students and development of their achievements. By keeping in mind the students’ needs and preferences, teaching methods have to be adapted in order to make it possible for teachers to express their creativity in teaching. In order to analyse the present ways of teaching music and to foresee possible changes, research was conducted among the second and third grade students of Osijek grammar schools. The students gave their opinion of the music lessons. The research results have shown that the students have a positive attitude towards the subject and they are aware of the importance of music in their cultural and social life. They have also suggested possible ways of teaching which will result in better, more inventive and more successful music lessons and replace traditional methods.
