Sažetak
The Book of papers entitled “Conference Proceedings of SEM2016” presents 29 original scientific papers reviewed and revised from 32 papers initially submitted for the “4th International Symposium on Environmental Management - Towards Circular Economy (SEM2016)” held on December 7– 9, 2016, in Zagreb, Croatia. The Book of papers covers the important topics within the field of Environmental Management and Circular Economy. The selected papers discuss the research results and novel findings on water quality management ; catalytic oxidation and photocatalytic processes in wastewater treatments ; kinetic and isotherm modelling of reactors and/or processes ; preparation of catalysts ; ceria nanocrystals ; metal oxides ; nanostructured zinc and titanium oxide ; conducting polymers. Environmental problems like prediction of flaring CO2 emissions ; air quality and pollution ; marine litter ; soil contaminants ; recycling of waste ; building demolition waste, risk assessment of jarosite waste. Environmental Management offers research and opinions on use and conservation of natural resources, protection of habitats and control of hazards, spanning the field of environmental management without regard to traditional disciplinary boundaries. Increasing importance of Environmental resources management aims to ensure that ecosystem services being protected and maintained for future human generations, and also maintain ecosystem integrity through considering ethical, economic, and scientific (ecological) variables. Environmental resource management tries to identify factors affected by conflicts that rise between meeting needs and protecting resources. It is thus linked to environmental protection, sustainability and integrated landscape management. Following the advanced knowledge and achievements, new attitude is created that have directed the attention of industry to environmental management towards circular economy. The circular economy implies concrete and ambitious programme of action, with measures covering the whole cycle: from production and consumption to waste management and the market for secondary raw materials. These actions are going to contribute to "closing the loop" of product lifecycles through greater recycling and re-use, and bring benefits for both the environment and the economy and assure credible long-term path for waste management and recycling as well. Opposite of mainly present linear economy, circular economy is a generic term for an industrial economy that is producing no waste and pollution, by design or intention, and in which material flows are of two types, biological nutrients, designed to re-enter the biosphere safely, and technical nutrients, which are designed to circulate at high quality in the production system without entering the biosphere. Circular economy concept and legislative proposals boost global competitiveness, foster sustainable economic growth and generate new jobs as well. Since, environmental issues concerning the vitally important topics in “transitional economics”, such as Croatia ; environmental management consequently becomes an increasingly important tool. The solution on environmental problems typically involves the cooperation of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams. Scientists, engineers, sociologists, economists and other experts work together to design and implement processes or procedures to solve real or perceived environmental problems. The nowadays focus is moving towards sustainable environmental programs conceived by environmental engineers and managers providing our community with more proactive initiatives on protection of human life and well-being. The goal, “turning waste into a resource“ as a part of ‘closing the loop’ in circular economy systems is challenge of todays and future generation as well.
