Sažetak
Innovation is the application of new and improved ideas, procedures, goods, services, processes, which brings new benefits or the quality of the application. In a broader sense, innovation is any intervention that reduces input and increases productivity, improves quality of product or service, increase safety ; reduce waste, and any measure that leads to an increase in competitiveness. Scientific organizations in Croatia posses good scientific and research potential and represent a solid basis for the development of a competitive economy based on innovation. Croatian medium and large enterprises invest more than 90% of all private investment in research and development, of which large companies investing the largest share (over 60%), as opposed to micro and small enterprises (just under 8%). Due to the lack of public support for scientific and research activities and relatively low interest of companies, investments in the development of research and innovation in recent years has stagnated. Research and development activities, among other activities associated with the introduction of innovation in enterprises, are essential to the Croatian economy in order to become more competitive through companies productivity growth, access to new markets with higher value added, and finally bringing to sustainable employment in the context of a sharp global competition. Institute for the development of business management (IMD) in Lausanne announced the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2015 "in which Croatia is ranked 58th out of 61 of the world’s leading economy, which is an improvement of one place in the rankings when compared to 2014. IMD methodology is based on an analysis of four factors of competitiveness, and these are: economic performance, public sector efficiency, effectiveness of the business sector and infrastructure, and 5 index for each area. According to the "Europe 2020 - Competitiveness Report" from 2014 published by the World Economic Forum, Croatia is at a precarious 24 place. The report measures the impact of policies for smart, including environmentally sustainable Europe, using the approach of evaluation of advanced countries in the world as well as the individual EU member states and candidate countries. The objective of the 8th Seminar organized by the Faculty of Metallurgy, University of Zagreb and Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana is to encourage the strengthening of connections between the scientific and business sectors in the field of metal-engineering industry, with the emphasis on founding. Consequently, the seminar was designed as presentations of the current "state of the art" research in collaboration with industry, and investment in industrial facilities with the aim to improve the competitiveness. Successful investment should be based on the benefits and potential of each region, and achievable synergy of the public policy, scientific research capacity of the business sector activities. Such events represent an INVITATION to a common transformative process that involves a vision of the future development, identification of competitive advantage, setting strategic priorities and the use of smart policies and actions.
