Sažetak
Endemic nephropathy (EN) is a kidney disease affecting rural population living along the tributaries of Danube in several European countries. In Croatia, the total number of people at risk is around 100 000. The etiology of the disease is still unknown, but its endemic character could be indicative of an environmental causes. Selenium (Se) deficit common to all endemic areas in Yugoslavia, has enticed Maksimović to suggest the role of Se in the etiology of EN. Occurrence of selenium-responsive diseases of domestic animals in parts of Croatia close to the endemic area, as well as the suboptimal dietary Se intake in a sample of urban population, urged us to investigate the provision of this element to population of endemic areas.
