Sažetak
This study analyses the last half-century of Croatian drama (from the 1960s until today) by examining a group of established plays that show that the main idea in Croatian drama is a search for identity. The research mainly focuses on the attitude of the plays to the reality the authors live in. The result is an interesting triangle of dominating themes. In the 1970’s, the most dominant was the political drama that criticized the political system and its negative influence on Croatian identity (Ivo Brešan, Ivo Kušan, Dubravko J. Bužimski, Slobodan Šnajder, Ivan Bakmaz, Škrabe – Mujičić - Senker). In the 1980’s, the most dominant were emotions or the search for identity in the characters themselves (Miro Gavran, Lada Kaštelan, Mate Matišić). Furthermore, in the plays of the 1990s a certain loss of identity happened with intertextuality and acceptance of European theatre trends with a shapeless and black picture of the world (Ivan Vidić, Ivana Sajko, Filip Šovagović). That process finished in the 2000s, when the plays of the youngest generation (Milijan Ivezić, Ivana Ivković, Irena Škorić, Dino Pešut) showed a complete loss of identity, even an adoption of a foreign (American) identity. Each of the dominant themes mentioned has its particular relationship with intertextuality, and uses literature and its genres/models/themes/motifs according to its own needs.
