Sažetak
The picturebook can be interpreted as a space of multiple contacts: between images and words, but also, when translated, between different languages and cultures. This presentation proposes to explore intercultural connections between English and Croatian contexts by investigating two groups of picturebook translations. The first group encompasses Croatian translations of British and American picturebooks: specifically, the winners of the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal and the Randolph Caldecott Medal, both awarded for achievements in illustration. Since both awards are given only to picturebooks published in the UK and the US respectively, translations of the Medal Books into other languages can be understood as an important means of intercultural transfer. The presentation aims to give an overview of Croatian translations of the Medal-winning picturebooks, thus providing more general insights into trends in Croatian publishing and the status of international children’s book awards in Croatia. To demonstrate that the intercultural transfer between the Croatian and English context is bidirectional, the presentation will also explore English translations of Croatian picturebooks. In both groups, special focus will be on the book selection criteria, circumstances of the first publication of the translation and time period between the years of publication and translation.
