Sažetak
Croatian audiences were first introduced to A. A. Milne’s “bear of very little brain” in 1986: 60 years after the publication of Winnie-the- Pooh and 9 years after the premiere of its animated film adaptation, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, produced by Walt Disney Studio. Although Milne’s collection of stories is part of recommended reading lists in Croatian elementary schools, the majority of young readers first encounter the Hundred Acre Woods and its inhabitants through their Disney rendition. Furthermore, while Winnie-the-Pooh remains Milne’s only children’s book translated into Croatian, the number of picturebooks and storybooks, as well as children’s encyclopedias and other educational publications featuring Disney’s Pooh continues to grow. This presentation relies on two basic premises: 1) the character of Winnie-the-Pooh has reached Croatian audiences through both a linguistic (English into Croatian) and media (novel into animated feature film) “translation” ; 2) the character has taken on an existence independent of Milne’s source text and reaches audiences through retroactive reception via its animated adaptation. The aim of the presentation is to provide an overview of translations of children’s books featuring Disney’s Pooh, with special focus on the type and year of publication. The presentation will also explore possible influences of the Croatian translation of Milne’s stories on translations of Disney publications. Character and place names will receive special attention.
