Sažetak
The knowledge of collocation is definitely of high importance for developing writing and oral skills in the foreign language. Therefore, a good command of collocations of the target language is crucial for those who want to understand the foreign language and above all be able to express themselves in that foreign language. Since the learners do not have problems with understanding collocations, because their meaning can be deduced from the meaning of its components, collocations are not perceived as fixed phrases, but as free word- combinations. This leads, because of the native language interference, to negative transfer in the text production. Therefore, it is important to draw the attention of learners in all phases of the teaching process to the specific nature of collocations of a language and make them aware of it. Exercises of discovering collocations should be used for this purpose. In the second step, the collocations that were discovered need to be memorized and acquired through practice. Best exercises for this second step are matching, search, correction, transformation and reproductive exercises. All these steps should enable the learners for the active use of collocations, and therefore exercises that include oral and written text production should be developed. This way the pragmatic aspect of collocation use is taken into account, which is important because collocations are highly context dependent. If the learners get used to learn the foreign language through collocations, they will be able to produce phrases that the native speaker perceives as natural and acceptable. By achieving this competence, learners become able to produce language fluently and that way sound more natural. Teaching collocations should therefore become an important part of teaching vocabulary and gain at least the same value as other learning units.
