Sažetak
From the hedonic perspective, happiness consists of subjective experiences of pleasure and satisfaction. Subjective well-being refers to cognitive and affective evaluations of one's life. In recent years, scientists have begun to study different levels of affect on well-being. Findings indicate cultural and age-related differences in valuing and experiencing low- arousal and high-arousal affect. People from Western, more individualistic cultures, favour high-arousal positive states, while people from Eastern, more collectivistic cultures, value low- arousal positive states (Tsai, 2007). Similar differences have been found between younger and older people. Older adults are less likely to experience highly intense emotions (Scheibe et al., 2013 ; Windsor et al., 2012) and they associate happiness more with peacefulness and low-arousal emotions (Mogilner et al. 2011). On the other hand, younger adults report more experience of highly intense emotions and they tend to conceptualize happiness in terms of excitement and high- arousal states. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between affect arousal, satisfaction with life and happiness in life domains. The sample, balanced by country, age, gender and education, consisted of 1296 adult participants from six countries. Age ranged from 30 to 60 years (mean age 44.3). Participants completed the PANAS, the Satisfaction with Life Scale and rated their level of happiness on 7- point scales across 10 life domains. The pattern of correlations between domain happiness and affect shows that happiness is more linked with low arousal positive affect (relative to high-arousal positive affect) and high- arousal negative affect (compared with low- arousal negative affect). Results of the regression analysis show that positive and negative affect together with happiness in ten life domains account for 44% of the variance in life satisfaction. Four domain happiness (standard of life, family, community and spirituality), together with high-arousal negative and low-arousal positive affects significantly predicted life satisfaction. Country differences were found in levels of low arousal and high arousal, both for positive and negative affect. These findings emphasize the importance of investigating low arousal and high arousal emotion separately. The study also supports previous findings that happiness is defined as a low arousal positive state.
