Sažetak
The paper consists of two main parts. The first part includes an analysis of the relation between two social sciences. The efforts of early sociology to explore all social phenomena in a systematic and objective way, have inevitably directed it towards normative aspects of social live. Therefore, efforts to explore and explain the changes in the structured social behavior of people in modern industrial societies have set normative orders, such as morals, religion, and law in the center of sociological analysis. Shortly after the academic affirmation of General Sociology has been established, the disciplinary “connection” between Sociology and Law finds its expression in the Sociology of Law as a special sociological discipline. A distinct aspect of this early association has even a personal, biographical character since the connection of sociology and law represented an important aspect in the life and work of the founders of sociological thought (Marx, Weber, Durkheim). Nevertheless, the relationship of sociology and law has never been "idyllic". The lack of adequate empirical research and testing of basic theoretical assumptions places the Sociology of Law on the border between Philosophy of Law and Legal Theory. Such a position often enhances the impression of the redundancy and insufficient practical applicability of sociological knowledge of the law. The aforementioned contradictions are further enhanced by the rise of influence of neoliberal ideas and policies, which encourage marketization of education, including legal studies. The second part of the paper tests the presented arguments on the basis of results of empirical research conducted at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka in 2016. The survey covers various aspects of education and professional socialization of law students such as the motivation behind for choosing the legal studies, their perception of theoretical and practical content of education, attitudes towards legal and non-legal courses in the legal studies, the perception of the reputation of the legal profession, and their trust in social institutions particularly those related to the legal profession.
