Sažetak
This article will examine in which way the prose texts of the still very productive and controversial Czech bestselling author of popular fiction, Michal Viewegh, reflect social changes and new distribution of power relations in the Czech transitional society. The author will explore the key elements that occur in Viewegh’s popular texts and are recognized as relevant markers of the transitional society, and these are loss of identity, consumerism and rise of new political structures. Viewegh depicts post socialist society taking into account its main problems – suspicious financial gain of the new elite, social instability and new gender roles. Social changes reflected in popular novels of Michal Viewegh point out the struggle of modern people to find their place in a new society in which the roles and the rules have changed, and thus has the distribution of power. His texts illustrate the specific political space and point out the problems brought on by the establishment of the new political system. The article will in addition explore popular fiction as an important document of the social change in the post socialist societies.
