Sažetak
In 2008 Croatian literary circles celebrated the birth anniversary of the major Croatian Renaissance writer Marin Držić (Marino Darsa), born in Dubrovnik in 1508. For the occasion the publishing section of Croatian Writers’ Society published a special edition of Držić’s masterpiece, a comedy entitled Dundo Maroje. Even though the final scenes of the comedy were lost and the ending nowadays generally accepted is the one made by one of the Nineteenth century Croatian writers, Dundo Maroje has not ceased to attract spectators, critics and neither translators. The impressive volume of 1700 pages contains the original text of the comedy and its translations in seventeen languages as well as in Esperanto. The paper concentrates on three translations included in the volume, in particular on those in English, Italian and Polish, and also on yet another translation in Italian, which has remained less known for several decades. Apart from discussing four different titles of these translations, the paper analyses how the translators interpreted and treated numerous foreign elements, isolated words and entire phrases, which realize numerous textual functions in the original text and are crucial for a multilingual dimension of Darsa’s linguistic expression.
