Sažetak
Tourism is an activity whose implication reflects on all fields of life-social, cultural and economic. Economic significance of tourism has been on the rise on the global scale. It´s significance is visible in the share of receipts from tourism in GDP, and in the number of the employed. Except for direct effects, tourism also has significant multiplicative effects. As a tourist country, Croatia gives special consideration to its tourist development. Tourism is one of its basic export values. Foreign income from tourism mostly covers the traditionally negative balance of the balance of payments. This contributes to balancing of the Croatian balance of payments. Croatia stimulates investments in tourist capacities, invests in promotion on international markets, implements tourist standards. However, in some areas, key problem of tourist activities have not been solved ; privatization of important tourist capacities has not been completed ; the problem of land ownership has not been adequately solved in all the tourism entities, tax treatment of tourist services has been inadequate. Furthermore, occupancy of tourist capacities has been very modest, and hotel accommodation is almost completely seasonal, except in bigger towns. In many tourist resorts, except for accommodation and excessively priced catering services, it often occurs that tourists are deprived of the possibility to spend on cultural or entertaining events. However, by applying adequate stimulative measures of economic policy, it is possible to increase foreign receipts from tourism and improve the position of tourism in the Croatian balance of payments.
