Sažetak
The production of agroindustrial waste is growing world-wide and these wastes can be biological treated by composting process and anaerobic digestion. Using these processes can be reduced the volume of solid waste and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The biological treatment of agroindustrial wastes is an interesting alternative if the proper wastes are mixed. Agroindustrial wastes offer a wide variety of potential co-substrates, and many of these possibilities have not yet been explored. In Croatia is a strong presence of agro- industries that generate a significant volume of these types of wastes such as grape, olive and tobacco wastes. The composting process and anaerobic digestion is a biological decomposition of biodegradable solid waste under controlled aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. The end products of composting and anaerobic digestion are compost which can be used as a soil amendment and fertilizer, and biogas (CH4, CO2) and digestate, respectively. Digestate is the solid and/or liquid residual material which is not stable after anaerobic digestion and cannot be disposed in the landfill. The objective of this work was to conduct composting process and anaerobic digestion of mixture of agroindustrial waste, grape (G), olive (O) and tobacco (T) waste. Composting process and anaerobic digestion were carried out in column reactors with effective volume of 10 dm3 and 124 cm3, respectively, during 21 days. The initial C/N ratio and moisture of both process was 35/1 and 60 % and 85 %, respectively, and the waste was mixed in the ratio G:O:T = 1 : 1 : 1.98 (dry matter). The temperature in anaerobic digester was 37 °C. During 21 days of composting of agroindustrial waste the C/N ratio decreased to 25/1 and obtained conversion was 50 %. The pH value increased from 6.23 to 9.24. Results obtained during anaerobic digestion shows that chemical oxygen demand (COD) at the beginning of process was 1.45 gO2/gDM and at the end 0.73 gO2/gDM. C/N ratio at the end of process was 27/1. The volume of biogas produced during 21 days was 300 cm3. From results it can be concluded that in both process agroindustrial waste was biodegraded and that these materials have potential to produce biogas.
