Sažetak
In the last three decades research in both tourism and entrepreneurship fields has grown significantly (Cornelius et al., 2006 ; Xiao & Smith, 2006). Many established researchers have explored and contributed to the field of entrepreneurship from a number of disciplines, such as economics, psychology and sociology (Low, 2001). In contrast, some tourism scholars argue that tourism entrepreneurship has remained a largely neglected area for research and has not received the level of attention it deserves (Ioannides & Petersen, 2003 ; Li, 2008). In addition, it has been argued that the majority of research in both fields, and consequently tourism entrepreneurship, is derived from developed economies with a paucity of studies focusing on lesser developed or transition economies (Veijola, 2007). In this paper, we aim to provide a platform for critical inquiry in tourism entrepreneurship research and move beyond technical interests in knowledge creation (Habermas, 1978) and business and management saturated theories which provide only ‘partial reading of the world’ (Tribe, 2007, p.36). More specifically, our first objective is to expose the uni- dimensional understanding achieved through dependence on ideological, disciplinary and methodological bias/power in both the tourism and entrepreneurship fields. Secondly, through the study of tourism entrepreneurs in Croatia, we aim to show how understanding and emancipation can be included in theory building.
