Sažetak
Tourism entrepreneurship in the context of Central and Eastern European countries has received little attention from scholars. We believe that further research is required in order to deepen understanding and to challenge established Western views on the subject. In this paper we analyse the business environment in former socialist economy Croatia and consequent entrepreneurial strategies undertaken. Findings suggest that besides high barriers to entry, historical legacies still affect the population’s mentality towards entrepreneurs. In order to survive in such environment, hotel industry entrepreneurs undertake specific strategies which compensate for underdeveloped market institutions. The adopted research approach, which takes into account the context in which entrepreneurs operate, demonstrates that Western economies concepts do not have strong resonance in former socialist economies.
