Sažetak
Predicting and understanding the impact of soil fauna on the dynamics of soil organic matter is an important challenge since this dynamics conditions soil fertility and influences the stock of soil carbon, which is crucial in the context of the current global warming driven by greenhouse gases. The diversity and complexity of the involved mechanisms render the use of models to meet this challenge. However, very few soil organic matter models have so far been designed to include explicitly soil fauna. We here first review these few models, from pure mathematical to complex simulation models, and briefly mention their prons and cons. We then review the diversity of mechanisms involved and through which soil fauna impact soil organic matter dynamics: (1) litter fragmentation, (2) bioturbation, (3) consumption of litter, (4) consumption of soil organic matter, (5) stimulation of microorganisms, (6) stabilization of organic matter within feces, (7) food web effects. We list the main types of models that could be built in the future and describe the model we are currently building. Finally, we mention the difficult issue of replancing the action of soil fauna in a complete ecosystem where all processes interact and where soil fauna also impacts primary production and losses of mineral nutrients. All these interacting processes (impacts of mineralization, nutrient losses and primary production) must be taken into account together to predict the impact of soil fauna on carbon stocks.
