Sažetak
This presentation will report on a literature review which seeks to explore the possibility of a transdisciplinary knowledge organization (TKO) from the outlook of information science and the theory of knowledge organization. The key questions posed will be: Are current knowledge organization systems (KOS’s) designed to stimulate transdisciplinary research? Is it possible to enable representation of a higher complexity of life via more complex systemic inter-term relationships? What organizing principles need be employed to allow TKO? Disciplinary knowledge classifications have been criticized for being reductionist and dogmatic in their nature which contributes to the growing specialization in science also referred to as the particularization of disciplinary subjects. Transdisciplinarity emerges as a scientific principle that points to problems that can only be resolved by transcending disciplinary boundaries and knowledge integration of various scientific and non-scientific perspectives. This notion of pluriperspectivism has significant repercussions in allowing access to subject knowledge which is mediated by KOS’s. If KOS’s would be able to represent the complexities of lived realities in their entirety access to subject knowledge would not be achieved only through a methodological reduction of reality. The second part of the presentation will report on attempts to represent mentioned complexities as complex inter-term relationships in multidisciplinary and non-disciplinary schemes developed in the field of KO. Finally, taking into consideration elaborated developments in the field of KO author discusses the problem of qualitative differences in scientific and non- scientific knowledge and the problem of their parallel representation in a single KOS.
