Sažetak
At the end of the 20th century many scholarly and cultural institutions, as well as individual intellectuals, tried to asses the century which is behind us, and to predict either “ local” or “ global” future. Joining those efforts, the scholars at the Ivo Pilar Institute decided at the end of 1999 to organize a scholarly symposium on the topic of European integration. Invitations were issued to a number of scholars in Croatia, Western Europe, and the U.S. who had made various aspects of “ globalization perspective” a part of their professional work. We received positive answers from most of the Croatian invitees, the majority of those from North America, and a smaller number of European scholars. However, conditions for holding the symposium entitled “ European Integration for the 21st Century, ” given the number and the professional biographies of the invitees, were successfully fulfilled. The Symposium was held in Dubrovnik from December 1st through 3rd , 1999, and it also included a round-table discussion on “ The Stability Pact” chaired by thr then Croatian Ambassador in USA Miomir Žužul. In addition to plenary sessions, the Symposium featured three thematic units – “ European Integrations, Aspects of Security and Stability, and A Croatian Perspective. Given the current importance of the topic, enviable professional level of the speakers, and public interest, we have decided to publish the proceedings of the Symposium as a volume in the Ivo Pilar Institute series of Miscellanies. We retained the thematic structure of the Symposium, as well as the order of papers. The opening speech by the then Minister of European Integration and Vice President of the Croatian Government, and of the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been published at the end of the volume.
