Sažetak
Oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) is aromatic plant very rich in essential oil representing important natural resource of thymol and carvacrol. Those compounds can be transformed to more valuable thymoquinone. Here, a comparative study is reported to explain the oregano essential oil oxidation by potassium monopersulfate or hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by first generation of catalysts: Fe (III) meso-tetraphenylporphyrin or Fe (III) phthalocyanine. Both are highly efficient catalysts of the KHSO5 oxidation of essential oil. Full substrate conversion was observed within 30 minutes and cocatalyst ammonium acetate do not influenced the catalytic process. When H2O2 is used, relatively slower conversion and lower reaction yield are observed and the presence of ammonium acetate influenced the oxidation cycle with both catalysts. In conclusion, the essential oil with major compounds thymol (47.6%) and carvacrol (25.1%) can be easily oxidized to oil with thymoquinone (19.1 - 63.3%) as main compound.
