Sažetak
The aim of this study was to determine how well some constructs of self-determination theory and personality traits predict alcohol and cannabis consumption among students that live in student dormitories in Zagreb. In a sample of 438 students (37.9% men and 62.1% women) that live in student dormitories in Zagreb the following instruments were applied: Self- Determination Scale (Sheldon & Deci, 1993), adapted version of the General Causality Orientations Scale (Deci & Ryan, 1985), General Need Satisfaction Scale (Gagne, 2003), International Personality Item Pool (IPIP50) - extraversion, consciousness and neuroticism subscales ; and the questions on last month alcohol use and lifetime prevalence of cannabis consumption (number of days). Separate hierarchical regression analyses for men and women were conducted with a number of days person consumed alcohol in the last month, and the number of days person consumed cannabis in a lifetime as criteria. Personality traits, autonomy and control causality orientations, self-determination, needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness were predictors. The model explained 17.5% of alcohol use among men, and significant predictors were extraversion and relatedness. Among women, the model explained 11.8% of alcohol consumption, and extraversion and autonomy causality orientations were significant determinants. Proposed model didn’t explain cannabis consumption among men. Among woman, 12.6% of cannabis consumption was explained, and significant determinants were extraversion, self-determination and relatedness. Results that alcohol and cannabis consumption among men and women are motivated with different factors give important insight that can be used for mental health policies. Implications for psychotherapy are considered.
