Sažetak
Dietary habits built during the childhood have strong impact on the dietary habits throughout the lifecycle and as such have great impact on our health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate dietary habits of school age children enrolled in Catholic School Centre "St. Francis" in Tuzla. Cross-sectional study was conducted which encompassed 102 children. Since children of this age are not able to estimate their own dietary intake questionnaire was filled in by parents which were in most cases mothers (79 %). Most children (67 %) were from the urban area. Results have shown that most of the children (59 %) consumes 4 meals daily, 2 of which are cooked (63 %), and there are no children with less than 3 meals daily which is good. The most often choice for breakfast is some bread or bagel with some dairy spread. Fruit is consumed on a daily basis by 46 % and vegetables by 56 % of children but only 30 % and 12 % of them takes it more than once daily as recommended. 45 % of children consumes meat on a daily basis. Encouraging fact is that children consume fast food (56 %) and salty snacks (45 %) rarely, but on the other hand 50 % of them enjoys cakes and other sweets daily. Considering the liquid intake they rarely (71 %) consume soft drinks and drink three or more glasses of water (75 %). Milk is consumed on a daily basis by 42 % of children and only by 19 % of children in higher amounts, while 38 % of children consumes milk on a weekly basis or very rarely. Altogether, although results are very positive concerning some habits like number of meals and absence of snacking and soft drinks, they also indicate need for education with the respect to milk and dairy product intake, as well as the fruit and vegetable intake, which are below the recommendations.
