Sažetak
Many univerisities report about increasing stress and psychological problems among students in the last two decades. According to the Australian research there are indications that students may be more prone to anxiety and depression comparing to general population (non-students) of the same age. The main aim of this study was to check if the same is true for Croatian students. Because of the high unemployment rate in Croatia, which may confound the results, we compared students with employed and enemployed young people of the same age. The sample of students, employed and unemployed young people (age 19 to 28) have been assessed. The measures included DAS (Depression, anxiety and stress scale), Life Satisfaction Scale, Achieved criteria for adulthood and IDEA (Inventory of the Dimensions of Emerging Adulthood). The results showed that employed young adults report about achieving more of the adulthood criteria, are the most satisfied with their life, percieve the least symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression, comparing to students and unemployed emerging adults. Students report about achieving the least adulthood criteria comparing to non-students (employed and unemployed). They percieve more stress and report more depressive symptoms comparing to employed, but less than unemployed young people. Their anxiety level is similar to unemployed, but higher comparing to employed one. The only gender difference in the group of students and employed young people is in perceived stress. Females percieve higher stress than males. The gender differences are more pronounced among unemployed emerging adults. Among them, males are more depressed, less satisfied with their lives and report about achieving the least of adulthood criteria. The results are discussed refering to different dimensions of emerging adulthood.
