Sažetak
In most countries, groundwater and/or surface water represents the main source of drinking water supply. In the case of sufficient renewable freshwater resources, there is the question of selecting a water resource that is optimal from different criteria or point of view. This paper presents the method of choosing optimal groundwater pumping site (well field) using the multi-criteria method Promethee. The method was tested within real case study on three existing well fields serving the public water supply in the Varaždin County (Croatia) ; well fields Varaždin, Bartolovec and Vinokovščak. Regarding this, two criteria were included: health criterion (annual average concentration of nitrate in groundwater in mg/l NO3-) and technological-hydraulic criterion (average capacity of the water well in l/s). This procedure determined which well/well field is suitable and convenient to use, depending on the selected criteria. It is expected that this methodology will be applicable to other types of available water resources, especially in the case of surface water abstraction.
