Sažetak
Teaching Croatian language and literature in lower primary grades embraces some examples of literary translations of English children’s literature, which are included in teaching materials, in particular literary readers. The selection of texts used in class, and in readers, is determined by the guidelines given in curricular documents and based upon principles of the teaching methodology of the school subject Croatian as the mother tongue. However, a selection of translated texts is not strictly prescribed. The authors of Croatian readers differ in their selection of translated English literature, which has been established by means of the content analysis of Croatian readers for lower primary grades at the turn of the 21st century. The paper considers the reasons of those differences. The focus is on the practices of choosing literary texts translated from English into Croatian, which are analysed in terms of norms in regard to literary canon. Also, the author analyses a selection of translated texts in the corpus. The findings are considered in the context of Croatian educational documents and in a wider socio-cultural context.
