Sažetak
The importance of handwork was emphasized by many educators, some of whom are J. A. Komensky, J. H. Pestalozzi, G. Kerschensteiner who have demanded introduction of handwork into schools. Education without the practical work is incomplete and it ihibits one of the most important requirements of contemporary education, which is the integrated child development. Handwork effects the development of fine motorics, precision, concentration, persistence, patience and self- confidence. By creating aestetic beautiful and useful objects children cherish the sense of beauty as an integral part of everyday life. Handwork enables students to create new ideas and designs which encourage students' creativity and imagination. By handling various materials of different colours students develop sense for the material, its respect and the sense for colours. Students teach the process of making objects from idea to final product by handwork and that contibutes to the development of the ability of planning and organising activities. Handwork gives a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. One of the most important purpose of the handwork is development of will and reasoning, and previous studies have shown that fine motor hand movements encourage brain cells development. Educational policy in some Balkan countries, including Croatia, focuses on cognitive abilities, wherewith all other students' potentials and competences are not utilised enough, yet ignored. Model can be found in the Waldorf schools, whose goal is a healthy development of individuals through learning by hand, heart, head and practical work. The curriculum of Waldorf primary school is based on arts, so students who attend such schools from first grade are acquainted with handwork. During their education, students learn different techniques of handwork such as knitting, crocheting, sewing and others. The aim of this paper is to present a program of subject handwork by grades and stages of students' development in Waldorf primary school in Croatia, whose segments could be implemented in public primary schools. Values which arise from handwork indicate that contemporary education should give greater importance to the handwork.
