Sažetak
ABSTRACT. -The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a group of weak organic acids with anti-inflammatory properties. These agents have been used profusely and succesfully in the symptomatic treatment of both acute and chronic inflammatory disorders in human and animal clinical practice. However, their use may be restricted by the high incidence of associated toxic side effects, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract and kidney, owing to their relative non-selectivity in inhibiting the ciclooxygenase (COX) isoenzymes, COX-1 and COX-2. Here, I have reviewed some basic characteristics of inflammation, potential mechanisms by which NSAIDs exert their anti-inflammatory effects, and indications for their use in large animal species.
