Sažetak
Due to rapid industrialization and large-scale anthropogenic activities, the pollution level is increasing at a rapid rate. Most countries do not restrict industrialization despite of increased pollution levels. The increasing need for remediation of contaminated sites has led to the development of new technologies that emphasize the biological detoxification and biodegradation of the organic contaminants. Though many of remediation techniques are available, the use of microorganisms has many advantages like cost effectiveness, non hazardous by-products, and reusability. Biological processes are preferred over chemical treatment as they are environmentally safe and techno-economically viable. Bioremediation uses naturally occurring microorganisms to degrade hazardous toxic substances into less toxic or nontoxic substances. Microorganisms are readily available, rapidly characterized, highly diverse, omnipresent. As bioremediation can be effective only where environmental conditions permit microbial growth and activity, its application often involves the manipulation of environmental factors to allow microbial growth and degradation to proceed at a faster rate. The principles of bioremediation are based on natural attenuation, biostimulation and bioaugmentation. Through natural attenuation, contaminants are reduced by native microorganisms without any human augmentation. Biostimulation is used where nutrients and oxygen are applied to the system to improve its effectiveness and to accelerate biodegradation. During bioaugmentation, microorganisms are added to the system and should be more efficient at degrading the target contaminants. Results of bioremediation include accelerated decomposition of many hazardous organic compounds, improvement in environmental quality and reduction of human health risks. Bioremediation as an environmentally sound technique involves usage naturally present microorganisms to restore contaminated environments.
