Sažetak
This B.A. thesis was written with the purpose of obtaining a B.A. degree at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka. It consists of translations of four texts from the Croatian into the English language. The chosen texts are of different genres and they also differ in topic, style of writing and vocabulary. The first text tackled in this thesis was a medical text dealing with the theme of alternative medicine, more precisely acupuncture, found on the Croatian medical portal Vaše zdravlje, the second one was a scientific paper on the topic of gastronomy in the light of experience tourism and experience economy written by a professor at the College for Management in Tourism and Informatics in Virovitica, the third text was a translation of a tourist guide book of sorts found on the website of Jutarnji List and the fourth text that I dealt with was an article found on the Croatian portal Globus which specializes mostly in political issues. The reason I have chosen such a variety of topics to translate in this thesis is my interest in coping with texts of varying levels of difficulty and different vocabulary and my desire to try to overcome the barriers that are presented while dealing with different text genres, styles of writing and problems that they pose to me as a translator. Each translation found in this thesis is preceded by a concise introduction to the original text in order to present the reader with the main topic and the type of text. Following the translation of each source text, there is a commentary and analysis section where the main problems that I have encountered are presented, as well as the description of my elaboration on those problems and the solutions that I decided upon. Preceding the main part of this thesis, i.e. the translations and the analyses themselves, there is a short introductory section which handles the topic of translation in general where some of the most prominent theories of translation are outlined. There is also a short conclusion at the end of this thesis which consists of a personal reflection on the experience and the process of translation. The source texts can be found in the appendix and their sources are listed in bibliography among other sources used for this B.A. thesis.
