Sažetak
The study reported here examines modifications of phraseological units and the creative use of PUs in the English language. In particular, it investigates patterns and regularities of such use, using the corpus of naturally-occurring data in support of statements. In order to do this, it first surveys the existing studies of PU modification, and develops a framework within which the phenomenon of PU modification can be best described. The description of patterns is based on the examples found in the British National Corpus, and the author’s own collection of PU modifications. The study addresses a number of issues: definition of the PU modification, types and scope of modification, and registers in which they most frequently occur. The conclusion suggests the existence of patterns of PU modification in English. Finally, implications for different linguistic disciplines are considered, and directions for further research suggested.
