Sažetak
Definitions, conceptions, understanding of old age, and ultimately, the experiences of ageing are shaped by the context in which they take place. It is exactly the importance of the context that leads to the conclusion that old age is a socially constructed category (Kerner Furnam 1997). Conceptions of old age and ageing are not only diverse, but also ambivalent and contradictory, which leads to the creation and support of unfounded generalizations and stereotypes (Nelson 2004, Hazan 2000). It is extremely important that the focus of the research of ageing and old age in the field of social and humanistic sciences is based on the subjective experiences of the older persons because it enables the voices of this population to be heard. However, there are very valuable reflections and images of old age and own ageing from the position of the employees (social workers, physiotherapists) in four homes for older persons in Zagreb and Split (Croatia). It is about specific institutions within which there have been (re)created various meanings of old age and ageing from the position of both the older persons and the employees. The employees reflect upon old age and ageing, and they create their own perspectives also in relation to both their private and professional experiences. The analysis confirms the thesis of Margaret Cruikshank (2009) that ageing is a cultural „creation of this time and place“, „determined by social institutions“ and a dominant discourse of active ageing.
