Sažetak
The foundation of work represents the export which has a crucial impact and contribution to the competitiveness of the national economy, especially in terms of dominant internationalization and globalization of post- transition countries. Croatia, as a post- transition small country, expresses a need for stronger integration into the world economy. Croatian companies are most ubiquitous on the market of Eastern Europe. The purpose of this paper is to investigate for which reasons Croatian exporters orient themselves primarily towards the Eastern European countries. Bringing the decision about the expansion onto the foreign market depends on various factors. Previous studies have shown how bigger resemblance between countries significantly impact the company’s decision on exporting in terms of the management’s suppression of risk aversion. The resemblance between countries, when it comes to export activities, can be measured by using CAGE distance framework that shows cultural, administrative, geographical and economic differences. Two basic goals are set for this paper: (i) identify how managers of Croatian exporting companies perceive the intensity of export obstacles between the markets of East Europe and Croatia in relation to Croatia and other markets using CAGE Distance Framework ; (ii) empirically and statistically determine the effect of export activity obstacles in the countries of East Europe on the export result of Croatian companies on the mentioned markets. Research comprises original datasets on attitudes of managers in Croatian export companies according to the distances between Croatia and Eastern European countries using CAGE distance framework. Research models, with the export activity of the firm as dependent variable and above mentioned attitudes of managers as independent variables, are created by using the multiple linear regression, with the stepwise approach to the selection of variables. The results indicate that the cultural and geographic differences among countries have no impact on export performance. On the other hand, some administrative differences adversely affect the export performance, while economic differences have a positive effect on the share of exports. Basic restriction of this research is the cross- sectional approach to the research. The data characteristics represent a onetime snapshot of specific data that do not give an insight into the long-term integration and interdependent changes. However, due to high costs of longitudinal studies, this approach has been chosen as a common practice. Additional insight into the problem could be achieved by conducting indepth interviews with the surveyed companies, which could be the venue for the future research.
