Sažetak
Energy storage is a key issue in future energy systems with a high share of intermittent renewable energy sources due to its ability to increase the overall operational efficiency of the entire system. Heat storage is, in most cases, a cost effective way to provide such benefits to district heating systems. In cases where cogeneration or power to heat technologies, such as heat pumps or electric heaters, are utilized these benefits can extend to the entire energy system enabling the integration of a much higher share of waste and intermittent renewable energy sources which are not at the full control of the operators. The goal of this work is to develop, demonstrate and validate a model capable of optimizing the heat storage capacity as well as the operation of the district heating system on an hourly level and with a time frame of one year. This approach allows the model to account for both the hourly and the seasonal variations in the overall system operation thus enabling it to calculate short term and seasonal effects of the heat storage systems. The model has been tested and validated on two different cases, the district heating systems of the cities of Osijek and Karlovac. Scenarios with and without domestic hot water preparation have been developed and are demonstrated in this paper.
