Sažetak
The archaeological site of Kaptol is located in the Požega Valley ; according to the geographical division of Croatia, the Požega Valley belongs to western Slavonia. Slavonia encompasses the territory of eastern Croatia, flanked by the River Drava to the north (the natural border between Croatia and Hungary), the River Sava to the south (which forms the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina), and the Danube to the east (the border with Serbia). Within these boundaries, the region is generally divided into eastern Slavonia, which is flat, and western, which is hilly. The Požega Valley, with its abundance of fertile land, is located on a favourable communication route, protected by mountains on all sides: Papuk to the north, Psunj to the west, Požeška Gora to the south, and Dilj and Krndija to the east. Ever since earliest prehistory, all through Classical Antiquity and the Middle Ages to the present day, its position has made it an ideal place to live. Despite its compactness, this hilly part of Slavonia is strategically open to a very important communication route – the River Sava, which was exceptionally important in prehistory. The road leading to the river passes through today’s town of Pleternica, situated at the so-called gate of the Požega Valley. Here, along a stretch not longer than 20 km, the River Orljava pushes through between the mountains of Požeška Gora and Dilj, and flows to the Sava. The location thus provided the possibility of safe life in the hinterland, surrounded with mountains, but also relatively quick access to the River Sava and the prehistoric exchange and trade route which went along the river.
