Sažetak
This thesis aims at emphasizing the positive influence of poetry in teaching English to young learners. It starts with the presentation of general and historical overview of children’s literature with special focus on poetry and goes on to explain some concepts related to poetry (elements and forms of poetry, fantasy and intertextuality in poetry, poem picturebooks, nursery rhymes, poetry collections). A thorough overview of relevant literature about the role and advantages of using poetry in teaching English is given. Poetry improves reading and writing skills, listening and speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, emotional intelligence and culture. In an effort to share the magic of poetry with young EFL learners, the thesis focuses on such issues as how to choose and assess poetry, how learners respond to poetry, and how to teach poetry in the English language classroom. Successful strategies in teaching poetry to young learners are described, as well as such activities as choral reading, dramatization, art, reconstructing poems. Finally, some examples of poems to be used in class are accompanied with appropriate activities.
