Sažetak
The objectives of the present study were to characterize atrazine mineralizing bacterial communities enriched from different environments, especially to determine the factors that govern their biotransformation activities and to evaluate their potential effectiveness in the treatment of effluents from atrazine production. Four bacterial communities were enriched (two originating from industrial effluents, one from the soil within the factory exposed for many years to repeated spills of the effluent from atrazine synthesis and one from undisturbed meadow soil never treated with atrazine) following continuous cultivation in activated sludge units with the inflow of mineral salts medium (MSM) containing 50 mg/L of atrazine and 50 mg/L of yeast extract at a dilution rate (D) of 0.1 1/h. All enriched communities showed substantial atrazine mineralizing activity (monitored by HPLC analyses and carbon dioxide evolution test) under waste water treatment conditions (ambient temperature, pH around 7) in MSM medium with atrazine as the only carbon and nitrogen source. In most cases the amendment of sodium citrate to MSM medium significantly stimulated atrazine catabolism leading to complete atrazine mineralization (80% of total carbon released as CO2).
