Sažetak
Vascular access is “the life line” for patients on chronic haemodialysis. Numerous studies have show n the superiority of w ellmatured upper extremity autogenous arteriovenous fistula compared to the arteriovenous graft or central venous catheter. Those results have been incorporated into the w ell-know n guidelines. Many preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative parameters influence the success of arteriovenous fistulas for haemodialysis. Some of them are w ell-know n, but there are also unknow n and immeasurable factors w hich could have an influence on arteriovenous fistula outcomes. Surgical experience and the level of education are some of the factors that are difficult to measure. Angioaccess procedures should not be considered as minor procedures. These operations must be restricted to surgeons w ith demonstrable interest and experience, or they should at least be carried out under their supervision. Constant effort should be put into continuous education of all participants in the care of ESRD patients. The purpose of this article is to review literature regarding the impact of vascular access surgeon's experience on fistula success and the impact of the education of all participants in care of patients needing vascular access for haemodialysis.
