Sažetak
The systematic research of mass graves is being conducted in Croatia for the last 20 years. The research is focused on locating and excavating of mass graves from the period of World War II and war in Croatia (1991-1995). The research of mass graves is being conducted by Croatian Ministry of Veterans› affairs using interdisciplinary approach and methodology that involves use of Human Remains Detection Dogs (HRD), but also field and aerial reconnaissance as well as cartographic analysis and spatial GIS documentation. Different environmental conditions (geology, vegetation, underground water) cause many problems for dog›s detection and consequently require adaptation of research to each specific position. In this paper we will present problems as well as solutions on using HRD dogs in mass graves research in Croatia from the period of World War II and Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995). The focus will be placed on organisation of detection and its documentation in big open area but also on smell pool problems and smell flow.
