Sažetak
Health Education in Croatia comprises four modules: Healthy living, Prevention of violent behavior, Addictions prevention and Sex/gender equality and responsible sexual behavior. The experimental program has been introduced through 12 school lessons per year within the homeroom classes in all grades of elementary and secondary school. Present ongoing implementation (2012 – 2014) represents second attempt to introduce Health Education in Croatian education system. Mixed methods approach used for the program evaluation in first year included: pilot testing of student knowledge, questionnaires for students, parents and teachers, group interviews with students and school staff and individual interviews with school principals. High school students (N=1175) completed questionnaire aiming at their attitudes, experiences and behavior in relation to four content areas/modules. Results showed that there is a difference in perception of importance of particular contents in respect of gender. Female high school students find contents within Addiction prevention, Appropriate behavior (part of Prevention of violent behavior module) and Sex/gender equality and responsible sexual behavior more important to internalize at school than male students. Differences according to gender were also found when knowledge of particular subject areas is tested. In 25-item instrument measuring involvement in life threatening or risk situations differences between male and female students weren’t found in only five situations: substance abuse of alcohol, tablets and tobacco, not fastening seat-belt in automobile and being in public transport without valid ticket. These findings show that great attention should be given to research design, selection of qualitative and quantitative methods and specific instruments when subjects of evaluation, both the participants and the program, demonstrate gender sensitivity. Education on health issues has a long term projections on demographic trends, values and society’s long-term goals in education, well-fare and labour policies. High-standard scientific research and conclusions based on it represent important leverages in decision making process.
