Sažetak
Apart from the low nutritional contribution of medicinal plants in the everyday diet due to their low content of basic macronutrients, these raw materials represent one of the most abundant natural sources of bioactive phytochemicals. The current quality control methodology of medicinal plant extracts differs markedly between countries, often not taking into account the basic macronutrient constituents and their effect on the overall bioactive potential. In the present study methodology is proposed that by using an array of spectrophotometric and chemometric techniques derives useful information about the relation between nutrient and non-nutrient constituents of 15 medicinal plant extracts from Lamiaceae, Asteraceae and other botanical families. The plant extracts were prepared by conventional aqueous extraction using a high liquid-to-soild ratio (LSR=50, w/w) and by stirring (500 rpm) at 80°C for 90 minutes. Spectrophotometric determination of specific subgroups of polyphenols and macronutrients such as proteins, amino acids, soluble carbohydrates and polysaccharides was conducted and revealed the prevalence of amino acids (0.61%) and soluble polysaccharides (1.69%) in marigold, while the plants deriving from the Lamiaceae family were characterized by a high proteins (thyme- 0.49%) and soluble carbohydrates content (peppermint- 11.6%). Lamiaceae plant extracts also exhibited significantly higher polyphenolic content (peppermint- 9.41%) in comparison to other plant species. The obtained results were interpreted statistically using multivariate statistical analyses as a mean of chemometric approach, and inidicated a siginificant correlation between hydroxycinnamic acids and soluble carbohydrates, as well as total flavons and flavonols, proteins and amino acids. A relation between the antioxidant capacity and carbohydrates content was established, indicating that carbohydrates may also influence the antioxidant activity of plant extracts, which is usually attributed only to polyphenols. The results of this study provide a useful tool as a platform that can discriminate the compounds responsible for antioxidant capacity of a substrate and provide a basis for a thorough characterization during determination of biological activity.
