Sažetak
The topic of my presentation takes as a given a recent shift in the humanities towards a transnational perspective that engages an increasingly globalizing and shrinking world. It is further contended that within this latest “transnational” ambit a new perspective might apply also to the established concepts in cultural studies such as “collective memory”, “cultural memory”, “cultural trauma”, etc. These interrelated trends – the transnationalization of national memory and the globalizing of national “cultural memory” – is of key importance to some of the recent texts produced by Croatian American writers such as Courtney Angela Brkic (the novel The First Rule of Swimming /2013/), Sara Nović (the novel Girl at War /2015/) and Josip Novakovich (Shopping for a Better Country /2012/ ; creative non-fiction). My presentation will situate some topics addressed in their works in the purview of national cultural memory and consider how they are transposed into a transnational cultural phenomenon. In the process these works illustrate the way a Croatian-American diasporic experience partakes of the latest global cultural shift.
