Sažetak
The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the research (especially from Croatia, but also from abroad) in which the relation between different variables regarding parenthood, with special emphasis on fertility motivation, and generativity was explored. Generativity is a broad concept which is closely linked to providing for the next generation, while parenting is the most common yet not the only means to express generativity. In a Croatian socio-cultural context, generativity just as its relation to parenting has rarely been the topic of research interest. This chapter begins with an overview of the theoretical approaches to generativity which are the most significant for an understanding of the relation between generativity and parenting. This is followed by a presentation of the results of Croatian research on generativity. After this, the results of research into the relation between different constructs related to parenting (being a parent, parenting styles and practices, child care activities, parenting satisfaction, importance of parenthood, offspring outcomes, etc.) and generativity were presented. This chapter also deals with the topic of fertility motivation in a Croatian cultural context, as well as other topics related to it. Therefore, the recent demographic trends in Croatia, the value of child in Croatia, the various determinants and aspects of fertility motivation as well as the relation between fertility motivation and generativity in the context of Croatian society are considered. In the conclusion of the chapter, one will find suggestions for future research.
