Sažetak
Linear B, the oldest known Greek script, was preceded by the still undeciphered Linear A. Both were mainly used for administrative purposes, the former writing down Mycenaean, the latter Minoan administrative transactions. Although numerous similarities in their signaries indicate that Linear B was adapted from Linear A for the purpose of recording a new language, striking differences in the types of their administrative documents do not likewise suggest a straightforward development of one system into the other. Those differences are most obvious in their sealing systems, with Linear B employing fairly distinct types of sealings from those employed by the preceding Linear A. In discussing the development of Linear B, therefore, we must distinguish between two different issues: the development of the script itself and the development of the administrative system within which the script was used. The paper focuses on the latter issue, more precisely on the transition from Linear A to Linear B in terms of the aforementioned differences in their sealing systems.
