Sažetak
Professional music education in Croatia can be traced back to 1829. In the 20th century the first School of Music in Zagreb grew into a conservatory, and after World War II it became an institution of higher education. Today, along with the study of music in Zagreb, centres that successfully apply theoretical, pedagogical, instrumental and vocal music education are located in Split, Osijek and Pula. The study of Music Pedagogy in Croatia is divided into two stages: undergraduate, which lasts four years, and graduate, which lasts one year. After completing the graduate study, the student with a master’s degree in music is qualified to work as a teacher of Music Culture in primary compulsory schools, as a teacher of Music Art in secondary schools, a teacher of music-theory subjects in primary music schools and as a teacher of music courses at teacher colleges. The largest number of graduate students find work primarily in schools, then in cultural institutions, the media, as well as publishing and production companies. A person with a master’s degree in music pedagogy, who has completed a graduate programme in music pedagogy, can enter the doctoral programme at one of the pedagogical studies in the Republic of Croatia ; for example, at the Faculty of Humanities – Department of Pedagogy or at the Teachers’ College, and acquire a doctor’s degree in General Pedagogy. Although in this case the orientation is in general pedagogy, there is the possibility that with a supervisor in pedagogy, and another one who is at the same time a music expert with a doctorate and a minimum vocation as an assistant professor, the doctoral dissertation theme can be in the field of music pedagogy. Given the fact that in Croatia it is not possible to achieve the doctorate in music pedagogy, elections to vocations following the acquisition of a doctorate degree, professionally and legally hinder the acquisition of adequate vocational titles. However, the main problem is that there is no profiled expert exclusively in the field of music pedagogythat with a three-year doctoral study may examine specific music- pedagogic areas and aspects: from scientific and theoretical research of wide music pedagogy areas, curricular and extracurricular music activities and programmes in kindergarten and schools, to music and pedagogical discourses which may influence culture and art. The purpose of this paper is to describe the ways of achieving a degree in music pedagogy in Croatia, with an emphasis on music-pedagogical subjects which are oriented toward the development of competence in teaching music at primary and secondary schools. The manner of acquiring a doctorate degree in pedagogy and the possibility of acquiring a title, vocation of assistant professor, associate and full professor will also be described.
