Sažetak
Legionella is a widespread bacterium that inhabits the aquatic environment (rivers, lakes, moist soil, wetlands). Legionella pneumophila causes two different clinical forms of the disease: pneumonia, known as Legionnaires' disease and a self-limited flu-like illness, Pontiac fever. The antimicrobial activity of essential oils and their components has been recognized for a very long time. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of exotic plant essential oils against L. pneumophila. Screening of exotic plant essential oils for antibacterial activity against L. pneumophila strain 130b was done by the disk diffusion method on BCYE agar with Tween 80 (0.5% v/v for easy difusion). Furthermore, using a broth dilution method in AYE broth, the MIC and MBC were determined. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined by visual inspection as the lack of visual turbidity and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) as no growth after culturing on BCYE agar. Aditionally, the time– kill studies were performed with 106 CFU/mL of L. pneumophila and different plant essential oil at 0, 5xMIC, 1xMIC, 2xMIC value. our results showed antibacterial activity of all essential oils against L. pneumophila. the Spikenard oil showed the best results against Legionella by well diffusion method (3m mm) and by brith dilution method (MIC=0, 05 mg/mL and MBC=0, 2 mg/mL). There was a significant drop in bacterial burden within 48 h within all tested essential oils against L. pneumophila. our results suggest that all tested essential oils possess strong anti-Legionella activities, and have a great potential to be used in control of legionellosis.
