Sažetak
Many developed countries and especially countries in transition seem to have a problem with the size of their public sector, deficits and debts. However, while most of the (advanced) transition countries decreased the size of their public sectors during the last few years, in Croatia is witnessed a trend of public sector expansion. Despite the rather high tax burden, the consolidated central government copes with deficit figures during the last few years. Also, albeit the overall public debt seems to stay within moderate levels, disturbing remarks about the borrowing trend and public debt structure can be made. The aim of this paper is - trough the insight into the budget deficit and public debt - to determine their sources and define major problem areas, as well to propose solutions for implementing fiscal discipline in Croatia.
